Research Blog #2 - Scouting the Territory

1.)My topic hasn’t changed since the first blog post. I refined my topic by limiting what I am really talking about throughout 

2.) Online I found many articles that talked about my topic, especially some newer ones that talked about how COVID-19 and the pandemic have affected the aspect of international students and how less students have been coming for various reasons. Things like wikipedia didn’t have much relating to my topic because of how recent it is and how unreliable wikipedia is sometimes.

3.) I found many sources through searching through the databases. Some of them are newer and would help me, but the older ones are a bit more obsolete because things have changed a lot.

4.)One of the topics that seemed important is why international students choose to come to the US, how it affects them, and of course the pandemic.

5.)One of the scholarly sources that I am using is a book by Yingyi Ma called “Ambitious and Anxious: How Chinese College Students Succeed and Struggle in American Higher Education” This was recommended to me by the professor and it really helped with my topic. Another source I am using is an article called “More International Students Were Coming to US Universities - Then COVID Hit” by Sara Reardon, it is one of the article that talks about my topic with the aspect of COVID involved.

6.) I haven't really found any controversies about my topic because it is not something that is new or very controversial. But some things that could be debated about is how people want to limit the people who enter or leave the country due to the pandemic.

    One of the topics I was thinking about choosing was about how international students were affected during the pandemic and if it was still worth it for them to come abroad to study.  If the price of college these days is still payable through the situation we are in now considering how many people lost their jobs. If they are staying back in the country they are from, does the timings of classes and test make it difficult for them to have a normal life. And if the students come over do they have any stress or anxiety something might happen to them or their family while they are separated.

Yingyi Ma talks a lot about how Chinese students struggle to fit into the United States culture when they first come here. She talks about how Chinese education norms are completely different than the one in the United States and talks about the problems with fitting in and uses many examples of things like this. 4.Yingyi Ma is a professor of sociology and she has written other books relating to International Students and Affairs. 5.Anxious- experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Research Blog #6: Visual

  This visual shows the number of Internation Students in the US from around 1950 to 2016. It shows a constant increase in the number of students that come from other countries every year. I chose this visual because it really helps explain my topic, on how the number of international students was on a constant rise, but it helps me talk about the impact of COVID-19 and how for one of the first times, rates have gone down for international graduate and undergraduate students.
