Yingyi Ma talks a lot about how Chinese students struggle to fit into the United States culture when they first come here. She talks about how Chinese education norms are completely different than the one in the United States and talks about the problems with fitting in and uses many examples of things like this. 4.Yingyi Ma is a professor of sociology and she has written other books relating to International Students and Affairs. 5.Anxious- experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Research Blog #9 - Argument & Counterargument

 My argument talks about why students come to the United States for education and is it worth it financially during the pandemic. I talked about how prices of universities here are rising every year, and with the situation of the pandemic and economic instability all around the world, and even the risk of people traveling. I also talk about the travel bans around the world and how it affects colleges in the United States that usually have a large number of international students. My counterargument would talk about how many universities offer various ways to cope during this time, like online classes from anywhere around the world, and if you go in person there are many clubs or organizations that are built to help new students who just came into the US to settle down. Research Blog #8 - Case

  One of my cases is about two people that came from China to the US for education here. One of the person background is extremely wealthy and is able to enjoy all the benefits here and talks about their time here and their challenges. The second person's background is of someone who is in the opposite side of the spectrum and is very poor. The story shows a very different account of how she is able to manage here, and how she has to work for everything she has. This case helps me show all the different problems people have when coming here, and how for some it may be easy to settle in, while others this might be their only hope of a better life.

Research Blog #7: Theoretical Frame

My theoretical frame is something I got from Zerrin Salikutluk, and it is called the Achievement Paradox. This theoretical frame helps me talk about why International Students come to the United States and what they hope to achieve. I use the terms Idealistic Expectations and Realistic Expectations to give two sides of the story of what I am trying to convey. One side like the name is ideal and gives the best possible scenarios for International Students and what they want to achieve. The realistic expectation talks about how your motives change as you get more and more into the culture of US colleges and how that can positively or negatively impact you. I am also looking for other articles and books that help me build onto this idea.

Research Blog #6: Visual

  This visual shows the number of Internation Students in the US from around 1950 to 2016. It shows a constant increase in the number of students that come from other countries every year. I chose this visual because it really helps explain my topic, on how the number of international students was on a constant rise, but it helps me talk about the impact of COVID-19 and how for one of the first times, rates have gone down for international graduate and undergraduate students.

Research Blog #5 - Revised RQs and Current Works Cited

 Revised Research Question: Is it worth it for students to go abroad for education, especially to places like the US where tuition prices are ever-growing, and what are the expectations they have for them to get in return? Is the impact of COVID-19 going to change these situations as families might not feel safe having their kids go across the world on their own and the financial situation of colleges and universities, and the students who are paying for them going to affect enrollment rates of colleges?
